Ah roomies. Chances are, in your lifetime, you will have to deal with more than a few different ones. And they don’t all tend to be … perfect. Most of the times it’s up to luck if your flatmates are going to be good or not, but we have 5 ultimate things you should look out for:
1. They don’t have a job
When it comes to living with someone, financial stability is a major player. While having no job doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t pay the bills, it’s extremely important to be strict about paying your bills on time.
2. Their home is messy
If you are looking to rent a room in someone’s home, pay attention to the cleanliness of the house. If they haven’t bothered to clean up to take a picture for the ad or when you come to see the place, chances are, they won’t bother to clean when you’re actually living there.
3. They are rude about your interests
When you’re first meeting your potential roommate, make sure to talk about things you like to do – your hobbies, favourite movies and TV shows, music etc. If you tell them you like watching The Kardashians in the evenings with a glass of wine and they tell you that reality TV is for dummies, don’t walk, RUN out the door. It’s okay to not have interests in common, but if they have open contempt for things that make you happy, they’re very likely to be unfriendly in other ways too.
4. They place post-it notes around the apartment instead of talking to you
No matter how busy someone is or how different your schedules are, there’s always time to talk to your roommate – especially if it is about something important.
5. They bring people into your room without telling you in advance
Run. Immediately.
