Sjøområdet

Sjøområdet, meaning "Seaside neighborhood" in Norwegian, is a scenic and peaceful neighborhood located in Tromsø. It is the oldest harbor area in Longyearbyen, and is located in the area between the University Center in Svalbard and Longyear Energiverk on both sides of the mouth of the Longyearelva in Adventfjorden. Sjøområdet is an export port for coal from Longyearbyen. Further east, the Advent River runs into the fjord, making the water in Sjøområdet relatively low in salt. In the west there is a built-up quayside, in the east there is a tidal zone with lots of benthic life and a rich life of wading birds.
